DEVYN ENTERS A NEW ERA WITH “PUSH ME” AND TALKS MULTIRACIAL ROOTS AND FUTURE PROJECTS. [EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW]

DEVYN, an independent Korean-American artist from the Pacific Northwest and currently based in LA, began her career in modeling and acting before transitioning to music in 2020. Despite her early success in those fields, DEVYN shares, “music was always my number one love. Growing up, I was in theatre and choir, did a lot of musicals, and even auditioned for a K-Pop group. I was training in Korea, which led to some companies showing interest.” However, after experiencing training, she left Korea and returned to the U.S. due to the pressures of societal and beauty standards. “They suggested I change everything.. I needed to lose weight, my skin was too tan, and they wanted to alter how I sang and dressed. It just felt kind of disheartening to hear all of that,” says DEVYN.

DEVYN starting music in Seattle was tough due to the city’s small music scene and felt LA was the place to be to really start her career in music,  “When I met with Natalie, I knew it was time to pivot into my music career. She believed in me and had an eye and ear for things.”

With Natalie’s support, DEVYN made her debut as a new artist in July 2021, followed with the single release “WHO”.

As a half-Korean, half-American female artist, DEVYN draws from a rich blend of cultural and musical influences. “ I lived in Korea as well as America. My influences were K-Pop and the music my mom loved, but also Alternative Rock and Blues from my dad’s side. I’m very grateful for being multiracial as it allows me to experience and merge two very different cultures. I really love seeing the acceptance and blends of different backgrounds and cultures in the industry now, but growing up I did experience the other side of that, so I struggled a lot in finding my identity along with certain pressures of being a woman added another layer of that challenge, but I wouldn’t change any of it because it shaped me to be who I am today as an artist.

DEVYN’s music blends the genres she grew up with, but with her new single, she’s exploring a fresh sound. On October 18, she released “PUSH ME,” a dynamic, punchy track produced by Taydex, known for his work with Joji. DEVYN co-wrote the song, which she describes as “an embodiment of finding freedom and joy from hurt and pain. It’s like taking a ‘fuck you’ moment and turning it into an ‘it’s okay, I love you’.. It pushes me to be better, stronger, wiser, and more grateful.” She hopes the song empowers listeners and encourages them to have fun. Inspired by Kylie Minogue and 2000s pop “PUSH ME” radiates bold, carefree energy.

When asked what colour best represents the track, DEVYN instantly associates it with a fiery bold orange, matching her current hair colour. “It feels like an inspiring fuel.”

This year, DEVYN has been experimenting with new sounds, blending pop, alternative, and ethereal influences with a feminine edge. “I’ve been listening to a lot of Caroline Polachek, Frou Frou, old Britney Spears, 2000s pop /  Alternative Rock.” As for future plans, DEVYN says, “there’s an EP in the works, but before that, we’re planning shows to promote the new music.”

With “PUSH ME” out now and an EP on the horizon, DEVYN hopes her fans feel powerful, undone, and have fun.

We’re excited for what’s next in DEVYN’s journey and can’t wait to see how her sound evolves.
