MONTHLY MIXTAPE: JULY 2024

I feel like I say this every month, but where did the month go?! This month, we loved a lot of songs that were released in June, but we do have a few songs released in July that we loved as well. It was a hard decision to narrow down the list, but I will be sharing my top 16 songs of the month.

Release Date: July 19th, 2024
“Who” by Jimin is the title track on his latest album *MUSE* which also came out on July 19th. The song is an upbeat, pop song infused with R&B and hip-hop elements. It’s so catchy, especially the repetitive line “who is my heart waiting for?”. It has a very nostalgic feel to it which is why I loved it. It reminds me of the songs I grew up listening to in the early 2000s. Though the whole album was a no-skip, this song is what I kept replaying since release.

Release Date: July 11th, 2024
I have been a fan of J.Y.N. for a while now and I love how diverse his music is. “This Tragedy” is an alternative-indie song with R&B, rock, and pop elements. I love the mix of different genres with J.Y.N.’s vocals and the electric guitar throughout the song. This style really suits him.

“STRANGER” is track 9 on greek’s latest album ACCELERATOR and was also my favourite song on the album. I came across greek last year in 2023, but came across him again with the release of this album as hanuel from PRYVT added a few songs to his public Spotify playlist. This song is so catchy and is a beautiful, chill slow R&B style song. I really love the string instruments used at the end of the song too.

“Where Did You Go?” seriously was stuck in my head all month. Despite coming out in mid-June, I really fell in love with the song towards the end of June. damnboy! is so talented and I love the overall, summery vibe of this song. The lyrics are also relatable and hit. I discovered damnboy! this year and I have become such a fan of his music.

Ffion released this single “baby baby” in June and I am obsessed. I can’t explain the genre as it’s a mix of a bunch, but this genre suits Ffion so much. I love this song so much from the production, to her lyrics to her vocals. The overall song is so catchy and also has a nostalgic feel to it, while also having an action movie feel to it. All in all, this song just makes me feel like a powerful woman when I listen to it.

“Second Chances” is just such a sweet song. I love the production and the lyrics of the song. It’s a slow R&B style song, but also has an Indie-Pop vibe to it. The whole song feels very nostalgic, or a song you would blast on a night drive. Jessie is incredibly talented and this song really showcases his talents. Definitely one of my favourite songs by him now.

I love a good pop-punk style song as it reminds me of the songs I grew up listening to. Koven Wei is an artist I love because he makes music in that genre. “ONESHOT” is one of my new favourite songs from Koven. I love how catchy it is, the visuals in the music video were fantastic. Additionally, I love that Reikko was featured on it. It was such a nice mix of Koven and Reikko’s vocals and lyricism together.

“CIRCLES!” is another pop-punk song that I loved this month. It’s a collaboration between two amazing Toronto artists Ashavari and Caj Flow. I love this song so much from the lyrics, to the production to the blend of Caj Flow and Ashavari’s vocals. The song is also doing amazing in streams and I hope that they make more music in this genre.

MICO truly is killing it with the releases. Every song he releases hits. He is such a talented artist and songwriter. MICO is also one of my favourite artists from Toronto and he makes music in the indie-rock genre. This song is upbeat and fun, with a relatable storyline with the lyrics.

elijah woods is someone I have listened to since his debut. He is such an incredible artist, and his discography is crazy not only for his own music, but for other people as well. Sticking to the nostalgic, early 2000s rock ish songs, this is another song in this genre. I am just a sucker for songs that remind me of my childhood when I was exploring different genres and really getting into music. We did a press coverage for this song as well, but “2 thousand 10” is a song about how when we were kids, we were young and free.

Release Date: July 15th, 2024
“Gas” is track 9 on NCT 127’s 6th album *WALK.* This was by far my favourite song on the album due to its upbeat and powerful production. It’s overall just a very catchy song and makes me want to dance. This style of music really suits NCT 127 and I always love when they have these vibes on their albums.

“Last words” by Blish and a 9uy is a catchy, R&B style song. It’s a slower song, but I love the vibe of it. I had never listened to a 9uy before either so this was a great introduction to his music too.

Karencici is an artist I came across this month thanks to Ethan Low posting about this song. As soon as I heard this song, I instantly became a fan of Karencici. This song is written in Chinese and although I don’t speak the language, the lyrics and production of the song are beautiful. I love Karencici’s overall vibe with this song and the cover art is so cute as well.

I feel like this being in my monthly mixtape just makes sense. I love keshi so much and I am so excited he had a comeback with this single. It’s so catchy and I love the R&B vibe. Not to compare artists, but it kind of reminds me of The Weeknd – another artist I adore. The track itself has an upbeat vibe to it thanks to the ‘80s style drum beat. Overall, such a fun and great song. Cannot wait to hear what else keshi will release this year.

This song was stuck in my head so much this month. I really love the vibe of it because it’s a romantic song, but also has a youthful feel to it. I love the collaboration between yedira, Shoi and BRINX. All of their voices together really blend well and I love Shoi and BRINX’s Korean lyrics. The production is also so fun since it has a slight rock feel to it with the four on the floor and electric guitar.

I am a casual listener of ENHYPEN and I love their music. They are still young so they still have that youthful sound in their music, but they still write meaningful songs about love and heartbreak. This song is so catchy and it’s the perfect summer anthem. I love the production of the song and each members vocals really shine through.
