MONTHLY MIXTAPE: SEPTEMBER 2023
BY BRENESSA ROACH | SEPTEMBER 30, 2023

Happy last day of September! This month had a lot of beautiful releases and it was definitely hard to narrow it down to just 12 songs we loved, but we did it.

Release Date: August 25, 2023
“life with u” was released at the end of August, but it was definitely one of my most played songs during the month of September. This song is absolutely beautiful and truly had me in the feels. Honestly, will be listening to this song forever now and I even got some friends hooked on to the song. I have been a fan of lullaboy for a while now and every single song he releases is so beautiful and unique.

PRYVT is a new collective with Korean-indie music. This song is their second release and it’s my favourite of the two. I love the vibes of this song and the production of it. AS well, love the English and Korean lyrics. Very excited to see what else PRYVT releases in the future.

“Vertigo” is a song I heard teased on TikTok a while ago, but then my friend sent me this song once it released and I have had it on repeat. I never listened to Griff prior to this song, but her voice is so beautiful and the lyrics of this song are so beautiful as well. I really love what she did with this songs production.

Avry is someone I have been listening to since late last year I think, but his new music this year really has me hooked. I love all of his recent releases, especially “Call Me On Your Way” which came out right at the beginning of September and didn’t leave my current rotation playlist at all. This song is so sweet and I love his warm vocals paired with the piano production.

I have been a fan of brb.’s since 2021 and every single release of theirs hits. This song coming out in September just made me so excited to see them live, which I did on the 18th in Toronto and they were amazing. This song live is just 10x better. brb. have such a cool energy and such a unique sound that I truly enjoy. If you want to read about their concert, read the article here.

“MAZE” is a song that I was very much looking forward to. I love the production of this song and hanuel’s vocals. I also love the meaning behind the song/the lyrics. The acoustic/live version hits even more, but overall this song is very good.

Olivia Rodrigo makes the best break-up and love songs. “pretty isn’t pretty” is by far my favourite song on her new album GUTS. However, this album was incredible overall and I liked it a lot more than her SOUR album. This song is the perfect blend of her indie-rock/punk style mixed with modern day ballads (if that makes any sense). I just love this song so much I cannot explain, so please listen to it.

I have been listening to MICO for over a year now and with each release he has, it just keeps getting better. “peaked” is the first song on his new EP the tears we fight. Absolutely loved the whole EP, but peaked stood out the most to me as the lyrics were so deep and beautiful. I really love MICO’s production style and his vocals.

Both hongjoin and RENE are artists I discovered this month through this song, which I believe I came across on keshiupdates Insta story. I absolutely love hongjoin’s voice mixed with RENE’s. This song is so beautiful and has such a nostalgic feel to it.

“green hills” is the 11th song on Townewest’s new album Before It’s Too Late. This whole album is a no-skip one, but green hills is just so beautiful. I am a sucker for slower/sadder songs and also a sucker for strings so, the combination of the lyrics and and the cello just completes this whole entire song for me. To read more about the meaning of this song and the entire album, we did an interview with Townewest which you can read here.

“Eclipse” is one of my favourite songs on The Rose’s new album DUAL. This album was another no-skip one so it was hard to choose a favourite song, but “Eclipse” stands out the most to me because of the production and lyricism. I absolutely love The Rose and I am so excited to see them next month in Toronto.

12. moonlight - C.Y. Ing, Aleebi

Release Date: September 29, 2023
My last favourite song of the month is “moonlight” which was released yesterday. Just from the teasers alone leading up to this song, this song was stuck in my head. Since it released, I have been singing it all day. I absolutely love the lyrics and the production. As well, I love the cover art so much. I think it’s really special that this song incorporates four different languages as well.
